Itinerary:

  • Start Time: 9:00 AM

  • Embark on your Hilo shore excursion with convenient pickup from right at the cruise ship terminal. Our first stop is at the iconic Wailuku River State Park, where you’ll be captivated by the majestic beauty of Rainbow Falls and Boiling Pots. With the right water flow in the river, and angle of the sun, hopefully we can catch a glimpse of the famed rainbow created in the mist of the falls and see why the ancient Hawaiians called this place Waianueanue. Just about mile upstream, stop at Pe’epe’e Falls, or Boiling Pots. This feature of the Wailuku River was shaped by years of rainwater eroding the ancient lava flows. Gain insights into Hawaii’s geological wonders and volcanic legacy as you immerse yourself in the natural splendor of these iconic sites.
  • Next we will head up the coast to Hawaii Tropical Bioreserve and Gardens, home to over 2,500 different species of plants. Walk the trails through lush rainforest observing many rare orchids, towering tropical trees, and a wide variety of other colorful tropical flowers. The Reserve is also home to a few cascading waterfalls, including Onomea Falls, and unique views of Onomea Bay that can only be seen from inside the Reserve. Learn about intricacies of Hawaiian biodiversity and conservation efforts aimed at preserving these precious ecosystems as you explore these beautiful gardens.
  • Discover more of lush rainforest and rugged coastline while cruising along Onemea scenic route. Stop along the way to capture the beauty and magic of the beautiful waterfalls. Savor a delicious included lunch at a local restaurant along this route that will offer you a taste of the region.
  • Take a guided exploration through Akaka Falls State Park, where your naturalist guide will tell you about the diverse botanical life that is inside the park. The trail wanders through lush rainforest and provides the opportunity to witness two waterfalls. Kahuna Falls is a cascading waterfalls that is slightly obscured but worth the short walk for a look. The main highlight is Akaka Falls, boasting a remarkable 442-foot free fall down a vertical cliff face adorned in vibrant green vegetation. The falls is an incredible spectacle and an essential highlight of any Hilo shore excursion.
  • Before returning back to the Hilo cruise ship terminal, explore the Hilo Farmers Market, a bustling hub of local flavors and artisanal crafts. Discover an array of fresh produce, locally produced products, and other cultural delights while immersing yourself in the vibrant atmosphere of Hawaii’s culinary scene.
